Lessons

Most of us have gone fishing at one time or another. I did as a child with my Dad at my grandparents’ pond. It was fully stocked, but you couldn’t tell it by what I caught. Zip, Zilch, Nada. I never caught anything but sure did have fun with my Dad. It was always a special time for me, Daddy’s girl. Grandpa would drive us in the car on the country roads – at high speeds – or so we thought! I remember Grandma saying, “Harold, slow down!” We laughed a lot!

Now, Mom and Grandma weren’t the fishing type. They cooked a lot! I learned how to make pies, cookies, and animal pancakes! Yes, you read it right! Animal pancakes. I can make a snake on a rock and cat pancakes, among others.

Grandma taught me how to candle eggs after we gathered them; they lived on a farm. Candling was challenging but an awesome skill. You pass each egg in front of a special light that allows you to see inside the egg. You need to make sure everything is okay before you can sell them to grocery stores. Grandma also taught me to crochet, embroidery, and how to paint patterns on pillowcases.

My grandparents are gone now, but my mind replays the memories. Fond memories, especially now, you see Mom and Dad are 92, in an assisted living facility, and both have Alzheimer’s. They still know who I am but suffer from short-term memory loss. I miss my Dad.

Make memories while you can with all of those you love. Write down or record the stories. Tell them you love them every chance you get. Blessings, all!
