Bargaining With God

And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

(Romans 8:28 NIV)

Most of us have tried to bargain with God whether or not we admit it. I will admit that I have. Subconsciously we try to manipulate God so our will might be done. Mistakenly, we believe that we know best. I remember the day. My new father-in-law had been rushed to the hospital with a heart problem. I really loved that man. He was fun, serious when needed, and a hardworking man. When I hear the words “a hardworkin’ man,” he comes to mind. My manipulation, bargaining with God, didn’t succeed, of course.

My husband and I had been married for 2 years and had an 18-month-old son who was scared of his Grandpa. Grandpa made funny noises. The week before Dad went into the hospital, our son learned to bang his little fork and spoon on the table. Who taught him? His noisy Grandpa did!

He did die in the hospital of complications of the surgery, but we have great memories, God’s way!
