For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
(1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV)
Passover is the most important Jewish holiday. It speaks of God’s redemption and deliverance of His chosen people. The Israelites found themselves in Egypt because of a great famine. Over time, the Egyptians enslaved them, forbidding them to return to their homeland. Studying the Passover in Exodus 12—14 helps us understand our faith in a more profound way.
The blood of an unblemished lamb was put over the doorposts of each Israelite home. When the Angel of Death “passed over” those houses, the lives of the firstborn male children were spared. In an opposite action, every firstborn son in Egypt died. Only then did Pharoh consent to let the Israelites go.
Over 1,400 years later, when John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching him, he proclaimed, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” (John 1:29). Jesus is our Passover Lamb! When we accept Jesus as Savior, His blood covers our sin. The Angel of Death will “pass over” us. We have been given eternal life!
