Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV)
After feeding five thousand people, Jesus sent His disciples to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Then He dismissed the crowd and went off by himself to pray. During the night, Jesus decided to join His disciples by walking on water toward them. The disciples were terrified. Peter knew it was Jesus, and he wanted to walk out to Him. Everything was fine until Peter’s eyes were diverted.
Prayerful devotion is essential if we are to live a spiritually focused life. We must keep our eyes on Jesus. When our attention is diverted, we easily fall into trouble by succumbing to our circumstances. When we focus on Jesus in all things, we will be free from worry and doubt.
