“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
(John 15:1-2 NIV)
Many times Jesus used examples in everyday life to illustrate spiritual truth. His audience could relate to fishing, tending sheep, and gardening. Jesus has said that He is the vine and His heavenly Father is the gardener. We are branches that require pruning. What does that mean, you ask?
Gardeners use pruning shears to remove dead branches. Fruitful branches must be pruned to stimulate new growth. In the same way, God is the vinedresser of our lives. He is the One who cultivates and prunes. God removes old habits, attitudes, and desires that prove harmful and sinful. He prunes faithful areas of our lives so we can become more productive.
Spiritual pruning is painful. Do not be afraid, though. God only prunes what is necessary for a vital and healthy spiritual life. He wants us to produce abundant spiritual fruit. We see new growth as our relationship with Him is nurtured. Are we allowing God to prune us?
A question to ponder, think about this. What will God hand you upon receiving your salvation – a tool to use in His garden, to turn the soil, or a shepherd’s staff, perhaps?
