Intimacy With God

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

(Matthew 26:39 NIV)

Jesus took His disciples to Gethsemane, an olive grove, before His arrest. He sought time alone with His heavenly Father as He anticipated the events soon to unfold. Jesus knew what lay ahead. How did He respond to the enormous emotional pain and sorrow He experienced in the Garden of Gethsemane? Jesus went to His heavenly Father in prayer and asked for His disciples to intercede also. He was honest yet submissive. Although He did not want to face death, He was willing to submit to His Father’s will.

If we truly want a personal relationship with God, we, too, must be humble and open before Him. He knows us thoroughly; He desires for us to be completely honest with Him about our emotions, thoughts, and concerns. He is the only one who will love us unconditionally regardless of our emotional state. Let’s follow Jesus’ example by honestly communicating with our heavenly Father.
