“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
(Matthew 7:24 NIV)
Many of us are familiar with the children’s songs based on Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:24-27. As a child, we may have enjoyed clapping our hands when the house on the sand went “smash.” However, as an adult, the reality of being buffeted by the storms of life is very sobering.
Our only true source of identity is Jesus Christ. Yet how often do we seek our identity in other ways? We may become wrapped up in material pleasures or influential people. When we build our lives on any foundation other than Jesus Christ, the Rock, it is only a matter of time before our sandy foundation begins to sink.
When hearts are not truly committed to Christ, attitudes like pride, selfishness, and greed creep into our hearts. We are not to seek satisfaction in temporal pleasures. Our identity is secure in Christ alone. Only then will we be able to stand, regardless of our circumstances. Our security depends upon it! Blessings, my friends! Let’s build our homes on the Rock—Jesus Christ.
