Humility

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

(James 4:6 NIV)

Humility goes against human nature. We naturally think of ourselves. Yet, to experience the life of Christ, we need the inner discipline of humility—being humble before God and our fellow man.

Although humility is challenging to teach, Jesus perfectly modeled it for us. In Philippians 2:5-8, the apostle Paul describes Christ’s humble attitude: “Have the same mindset as Jesus Christ, who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his advantage; instead, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Even though Jesus was fully God, He humbly died on a cross for us! And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross.”

Humility looks to the interests of others, not just ours. Humility is an inner discipline to which we aspire and enter into by degrees. It is a process by which we displace ourselves by enthroning God. God saves the humble, guides, sustains, and crowns them. We can always find someone to serve. Living humbly produces joy and profound daily appreciation.
