But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
(Genesis 50:19-20 NIV)
Joseph had every right to hold a grudge against his brothers, but he didn’t. They sold him into Egyptian slavery. Joseph was purchased by the captain of the Pharaoh’s guard, Potiphar, who was impressed by his intelligence and made him the master of his household. However, Joseph was falsely accused of sexual misconduct with Potiphar’s wife. He served three years in jail for this. Joseph never became bitter because he had faith that God was working on this. He eventually became Pharaoh’s right-hand man. At the reunion with his brothers, Joseph extended forgiveness to them.
When we are walking with God, we, too, will prosper and fulfill the purpose He has for us. I’ve been taught that the Lord will turn evil into good. Forgiveness is not based on feelings. It is an act of will. We must believe that God is in control and act on that belief by extending forgiveness. We will be held accountable for an unforgiving spirit. We will be blessed when we choose to forgive.
Choose a forgiving heart and spirit, my friends. Blessings.
