Confession

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

(1 John 1:19 NIV)

The sacrificial death of Christ cleanses us from all of our sins—past, present, and future. Why, then, do we need to confess our sins? Confession is simply agreeing with God that we have fallen short of His perfect standard.

“Sins of commission”—may be easy to identify; lying, gossiping, coveting, and stealing. However, what about “sins of omission”—things we fail to do?

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it; it is sin for them.” (James 4:17 NIV). Maybe we failed to make a phone call when prompted by Sarayu, or we were too busy to take the time to listen to a friend in need.

Ask the Lord to bring to mind sin in your life—especially sin of which you may be unaware. Then confess those sins. Confession restores intimacy with God. Our daily communion with God is vital to maintaining a Spirit-filled life. Confession releases us from guilt. We must take responsibility for our sins and receive the forgiveness and grace that Christ offers.
