He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
(Matthew 8:26-27 NIV)
Would you rather ride out a tropical storm on a cruise ship or a tiny rowboat? In a small boat, Jesus’ disciples had a terrifying experience on the Sea of Galilee when a furious storm quickly developed. The disciples feared for their lives while Jesus slept soundly. After being abruptly awoken, Jesus rebuked the waves and the disciples’ lack of faith. Had they truly understood who slept in their midst, they would have felt secure despite the furious storm.
When we are in the midst of life’s storms, we must remember Jesus is in our boat! Circumstances may lead us to believe He is sleeping; however, He knows exactly what’s happening! Our Creator can rebuke the horrifying waters and offer us peace. If we are only starting our spiritual journey, even life’s slightest trials can rock our boat.
Take heart! Our faith grows as we continue to trust Him during those times and experience His faithfulness. As we look back, we realize that our faith has grown. We are advancing not in our rowboat but instead in God’s protected cruise ship. Blessings all!
Lord, your presence alone brings me immeasurable peace. Help me give up the fallible control of my situation, relax, and trust in You completely. Amen.
