The Mind of Christ

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

(Colossians 3:2 NIV)

The slogan “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” was part of a campaign used years ago by the United Negro College Fund. This profound statement applies to all of us. Our minds have great capabilities, yet we can squander their potential.

Our mind is a battlefield where our thoughts are often under attack. What will we choose to dwell on? Where will we focus our thoughts? The apostle Paul stated his choice: We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5). We need to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things.

When we know Jesus, we begin to develop the mind of Christ through the indwelling Holy Spirit (Sarayu). We begin to process spiritual truth and see the world through His eyes. That’s when Satan steps in to attack our minds. “Be alert and of sober of mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). God has equipped us to stand firm by providing His spiritual armor (see Ephesians 6:10-17). The victory is ours, yet we must commit to dwell on truth and dismiss lies from our minds with the strength that God provides.
