No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
(1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV)
There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that all of us are tempted. The good news is that we do not have to give in to temptation. Temptation is tricky. We need always to be especially alert. Many times, after overcoming a big temptation, a smaller one may come along, and we will give in to it. “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful you don’t fall!” (1 Corinthians 10:12).
Pray for a wise and discerning heart. Temptation most often comes when we least expect it. Usually, temptation follows a mountaintop experience. That I can sincerely say, I can relate to one hundred percent! Maybe we’ve gotten “puffed up,” and pride blinds us from relying solely on Him. Perhaps we’re going through times of loneliness, hardship, or grief, and we’ve mistakenly concluded that God has forgotten us. In times like I’ve described, be alert to your vulnerability. Look for “the way out” that God is providing for you. Choose to take it! He is faithful! Let Him give you victory over temptation and enable you to stand.
Lord, make me aware of my vulnerability. May I look to You for the way of escape when I am tempted. Amen.
