The Struggle of the Flesh

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

(Galatians 5:16 NIV)

When we come to accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, we are given a new nature—a spiritual one. Unfortunately, we still have our nature of flesh to deal with.

Our nature of flesh opposes God because it would rather be in control than submit. The flesh is reflected in our attitudes, desires, and thoughts. There will always be a constant battle with the flesh.

How do we deal with this constant struggle? The solution is a Christ-centered life. Galatians 5:16-26 describes the contrasting results this way. When we put Christ on the throne of our lives, we give the Holy Spirit/Sarayu command. We submit to His authority. The fruit of the Spirit is evident: “Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” When we are in control, this is obvious: “Hatred, jealousy, fits of rage, self ambition, and envy.” Which list describes your life? Put Christ on the throne of your heart and experience the abundant life promised in John 10:10.
