For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
(Mark 10:45 NIV)
Although Jesus was God in the flesh, He never flaunted His authority or lorded it over others. Instead, Jesus came into this world to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. Servant leadership requires that the leader voluntarily become a “servant to all.” The focus is on serving others rather than being served.
During the Last Supper, Jesus modeled servant leadership by washing his disciples’ feet. In John 13:14-17, Jesus said, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
If we are Christ’s followers, we, too, are called to emulate His example. Let’s be a servant leader to those around us. We will, indeed, be blessed, my friends.
