God Speaks to Us

That you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

(Deuteronomy 30:20 NIV)

Do you believe that God speaks to us today? Joan of Arc was once asked why God spoke only to her. She replied, “Sir, you are wrong. God speaks to everyone. I just listen.” When God speaks, He desires us to listen. We must always be attuned to his voice. He wants to convey His love and impart truth. He longs to have a personal relationship with us.

God is constantly trying to get our attention. Yet sometimes we are so distracted, we miss it. Busyness can be used as an excuse for not hearing His voice, although a weak excuse in my view. Most often, we must be still to hear God speak.

God communicates with us in many ways. He clearly speaks through His Word, the Bible. The Holy Spirit (Sarayu) whispers in a small voice to our hearts. Other believers might impart God’s wisdom. Nature boldly proclaims His praises and reveals His attributes. God may also speak loudly through our circumstances that He opportunely arranges. God is speaking. Are we being still enough to listen?
